India-Meghalaya-Trip to Scotland of East!!!

Few years back, I had a trip to North Eastern States of India, which we lovingly call as “Seven Sisters”. Recently I have been regular in blogging, thought of sharing my amazing experience of my memorable, once upon a time trip. Few lines composed by me in Hindi, dedicated to this trip.

Yeh manzar hai kitna suhana,
Kee aapna sa lage har rasta begana,
Ankhoon me yaadein leke chal diye hum naye safar pe,
Per wapas zaroor aana kahe dil ka yeh fasana.

It was end of Oct of year 2009, the trip was with my best college buddies. End of Oct is kind of onset of winter season in North India. Hindi, which is our major language, we call this starting of Winter, as “Gulabi Sardi”.
The beautiful memories of the trip is still crystal clear. Our journey started from New Delhi railway station to Guwahati, it was 24hrs journey by train before we reached. In our 10 days long stay, we planned to cover Guwahati, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Darjeeling. But in this blog I am only touching Meghalaya, rest will be in subsequent blogs.
Meghalaya is one of the beautiful North Eastern States of India. It would be best to say, whole of North East India is breath-taking in beauty. Meghalaya which in Sanskrit means “the adobe of clouds” and also known as “Scotland of East”.

1) Shillong City
We reached Guwahati, stayed for a day. Next day, it was a road trip to reach Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, which was around 100 Km from Guwahati. The en route to reach the destination was beautiful as the place. Shillong weather was perfect, may be around 22°C. First day, we roamed around the streets of the city, an evening to always remember.

2) Elephant Falls
Next day, we headed towards Elephant Falls, named after Elephant like stone at its foot. It’s not very far from the city, just around 12Km away. The fall was consist of three mesmerizing falls in succession. The beauty of falls lie the way they were tucked between the dense trees and are very board.

3) Umian Lake
From Elephant Falls we headed towards Umian Lake. It was a mesmerizing man-made reservoir. Spell bound beauty and calmness of lake, will relieve your from hustle-bustle of big cities. Lake was surrounded by tick coniferous trees which gives a panoramic view.

Day 2, morning we planned our day road trip to Cherrapunji, around 60Km from Shillong. Cherrapunji, I was very excited to see this place. Since our schools days, we were reading about it, place having heaviest rainfall on Earth, situated of funnel valley of Garo and Khasi hills(these lines from my 8th standard geography book I still remember).
True to my imagination, lush green surroundings, hills, perfect road to drive. Perfect place to go for long romantic drive.

4) Mawsami Cave
The time was short, not enough to cover many things. We went to Mawsmai Cave. The well-lit cave view to behold when the glistening lights meet with the limestone to create countless hues and patterns of light. The length of cave was around 150 m. This was my first experience to go inside any caves, it was giving me goose-bump and I was imaging the horror scenes from a Hollywood horror-movie, especially “The Ring” which I watched just before my trip.

5) Nohsngithiang Falls
Then we were headed towards, Mawsami Falls also known as Nohsngithiang Falls or Seven Sisters Waterfalls. Very beautiful and picturesque, needs no introduction. It is one of the tallest waterfall in India, the waterfalls get illuminated by sun rays and the vibrant colors of the setting sun makes waterfall very beautiful.

Our day ended with this visit, we were headed back towards Shillong with beautiful memories. Next day from Shillong, we were back to Guwahati. We had limited time, many beautiful places were left. So, I promised myself, definitely I’ll come to this beautiful place again.
